A 43-year-old player in a virtual game world became so angry about her sudden divorce from her online husband that she logged on with his password and killed his digital persona, police said.
The woman, who has been jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his ID and password to log onto the popular interactive game “Maple Story” to carry out the virtual murder in May, a police official in the northern city of Sapporo said Thursday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of department policy.
“I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry,” the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.
The woman, a piano teacher, had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.
She has not yet been formally charged. If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison or a fine up to US$5,000.
Players in “Maple Story” create and manipulate digital images called “avatars” that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting monsters and other obstacles.
In virtual worlds, players often abandon their inhibitions, engaging in activity online that they would never do in the real world. For instance, sex with strangers is a common activity.
The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married to kill the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his online avatar was dead.
The woman was arrested Wednesday and taken 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) from her home in southern Miyazaki to be detained in Sapporo, where the man lives, the official said.
The police official said he did not know if she was married in the real world.
Bad online behavior is usually handled within the rules set up by online worlds, which can ban miscreants or take away their virtual possessions.
In recent years, misbehavior in the virtual world has in some cases had consequences in reality.
In August, a woman was charged in the U.S. state of Delaware with plotting the real-life abduction of a boyfriend she met through the virtual reality Web site “Second Life.”
In Tokyo, a 16-year-old boy was charged with stealing the ID and password from a fellow player of an online game in order to swindle virtual currency worth US$360,000.
Akakakakaka!

Comment by asnida 11.11.08 @ 8:34 pmI played Maple once. Tapi after lelama boring sbb dia grinding. My wifey however played until middle of last year dia quit for the same reason.
Not all gamers are like stated above, engage in sexual and immoral activities. I personally think chatters lagi banyak buat benda macam tuh because games nih selalu prob loading etc sbb heavy. With our TMNuts kasi one of the slowest internet access in this region lagilah prob. Chatting on the other hand programme dia ringan to upload. Hence microsoft and yahoo if not mistaken ban the rooms yang dulu available in the Messenger. Banyak yang salah guna to make porn/pedophile rooms etc.
Anyway cases like above do happen not just for online games, but LAN games as well. Some people entah macam mana have substituted their social life via these things.
In fact, kejadian mencuri identity from social networks such as friendster and facebook lagi dahsyat. Second life tuh for example is not a game. It is a social network macam friendster gak cuma dia 3D simulation. You have to pay to have an account sbb dia ada banyak capabilities, boleh buat rumah, ada world etc…
Hence, with more users sharing their private data online, some people even pay money you know to get other peoples personal info…
In real life lagilah, macam bank kasi jual data kita kat companies etc. Tuh yang memanjang orang phone nak jual itu ini. Kalau tanya mampos nak ngaku, but everyone knows they are the culprits.
Moral of the story, do be careful laying out ur private/personal data, be it in the virtual world or real world….
Comment by bluesyworms 11.12.08 @ 12:24 amWhoa, sampai macam tuh sekali eh?
I never knew these things are so huge and popular, I mean as it is I’m having problems keeping up with frenster and facebook, what more with all these things.
You are right about the ID theft, it’s very dangerous. Sometimes you are forced to reveal certain info about you to some institutions, but they in return would sell all these details with third parties, RM5 utk sorang. Nyampah betul if ada orang call kita claim that we won something or diorang nak promote kad etc. Dahla diorang tu kurang ajor.
My husband suruh call orang tu balik and offer to sell that person something else. Haaha
Comment by asnida 11.12.08 @ 2:44 amI pernah once biar jer orang tuh cakap for nearly 15minutes sorang sorang. Then dgn selambanya i kata thank you, not interested and then hang up. Perempuan tu dah tak call dah.
One more pulak kata i menang apa ntah, tapi kena untuk orang yang dah kahwin. I kata i duda [that time masih uni lagi]… terus dia gelabah mintak hold on nak tanya boss dulu. I saja saja mati mati kata nak pergi tapi last2 sekali dia kata i tak qualified. Hahahaha!!
Comment by bluesyworms 11.12.08 @ 7:03 amOh ya, grinding tuh terma gamers maksudnya game tuh dia banyak lawan jer non stop tak habis2 without a proper or conclusive storyline….
Comment by bluesyworms 11.12.08 @ 7:05 amActually for your info even Facebook pun dia punya terms and conditions are not really private. I nak buat article ttg benda ni, but i’m not sure whether Facebook dah ubah polisi dia or not. And seeing dah timbul issue privacy nih kat ur blog, so i raise the issue sini jerlah. Anyway, go see this;

Hence i tak pernah letak gambar proper be it on facebook or friendster. I do not want my face to suddenly be on a side of a bus somewhere in Texas…
Comment by bluesyworms 11.12.08 @ 7:16 amYalah, I dah tgk youtube tu, CIA punya ke…patutla kena letak full name and takleh ubah dah lepas tu. Scary man…
Comment by asnida 11.12.08 @ 7:57 pmWell nothing is free in this world. Just man man jelah when using such services. Better upload pic in other sites such as flickr etc.
As to the name, i guna nama samaran time registration both in friendster and facebook lepas pulak. Hahahaha!! Maybe because this nick dah lama i guna dan wujud di internet kot? huhuhuhu… Tapi yes i ada dengar some people cannot register kalau guna nama samaran, dont know why…
But not mistaken screen name tuh can ubah meh…
